Honor and Observance: Memorial Day Activities For Seniors

Memorial Day means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Most Americans consider this day to be the official beginning of summer. However, for many Americans, especially the senior community, this holiday commemorates something much more than beach trips and cookouts. For many seniors, it is about reflecting on the memory of soldiers who’ve fallen during service. Here at Francois Bend, we respect the fact that Memorial Day is a very special holiday for our residents. That’s why we’ve compiled a respectful, but fun, list of ideas to honor and observe Memorial Day with your aging loved one.

Memorial Day Activities to Do with Your Senior Loved One:

Wear your red, white, and blue – There’s no better way to show your patriotic spirit!

Make patriotic pinwheels and other patriotic crafts – Spend the day remembering our Veterans by making Memorial Day themed crafts.

Plan a Memorial Day picnic – Pack up a red, white, and blue themed meal and enjoy the beginning of summer.

Participate in a “National Moment of Remembrance” – At 3P.M. on Memorial Day, take a moment to pause and reflect upon the true meaning of the day.

Visit your local Veterans Memorial – Place flowers or American flags to show your gratitude to those who have fallen.

Write a letter to active service men and women – Take a moment to thank them for their service. There are tons of organizations that will send letters and care packages to those currently serving or deployed.

With Memorial Day fast approaching, hopefully this list of activities will give you ideas on how to observe this special holiday with a senior. We know that many senior Veterans are now in assisted living facilities and that’s why we at Francois Bend go above and beyond to serve those that have served our country. From all of us here, have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.
